Winona LaDuke: Bashing Greens won't help

'Tis the season to bash Greens. David Sarasohn's Nov. 14 commentary about Nader/LaDuke's impact on the 2000 presidential election falls far short on facts, and relies on lies, rhetoric and a really mean undercurrent to make a few points. Sarasohn's suggestion that Ralph Nader is "the worst thing to happen to civil liberties and poor people in quite a while," is insane, and fails not only to put the blame where it should be but also to talk about where we need to go... more

Nanotech Ultrafine Particles Linked to Disease

The issue #744 of Rachel's Newsletter (named after Rachel Carson) alerts readers to the pending increase of a dangerous industrial air pollutant.

"In sum the nanotech industry and the U.S. government are rapidly ramping up a new industrial capacity to manufacture ton quantities of ultrafine particles, very similar to particles already known to be killing tens of thousands of people in the U.S. each year. The complete catalog of harm from these particles remains to be written, but we already know that they cause or aggravate asthma and cardiovascular disease, damage the small airways of animals, adults, and children, carry metals and cancer-causing combustion byproducts deep into the lungs and even into the brain where they promote the growth of amyloid plaques associated with Alzheimer's disease."... more

What Does It Mean To Be An American?

In the current state of our society -- in the wake of 9-11, the war on terror, the climate of fear and suspicion of Arabs and Muslims or people perceived to be Arabs or Muslims -- is the definition of what it means to be an American shrinking?

From the perspectives of history, political science, philosophy, literature, and theology we would like to discuss various definitions of American identity, within the context(s) of the continuing struggle(s) for justice, equality, and freedom.

Commmunity Forum on the War in Iraq

March 22, 2003 -- Today's Community Forum about the War in Iraq was held at Century Center, sponsored by SB Common Council. The Common Council didn't present the anti-war resolution because according to Charlotte Pfeifer, they would have no votes for it and she didn't feel that it was appropriate to present it. Since 160 cities including the largest 3 in the US have passed this, I'm still not clear why our council couldn't even present it for a vote on March 10. More reason to have a Green on board... more
