Committee Reports

Environmental Committee - Don informed us of the need to contact legislators re the transportation of nuclear waste. He also discussed opportunities re sustainable development, land use planning, and Combined-Sewer-Overflow event notification for schools.

Old Business

We plan to table at the April 20 Earth Day celebration in Potawatomi Park, 11-4, and attend a speech by Germany’s Counsel General on environmental policy afterwards at IUSB. We also plan to table at the April 27 Earth Day fair at U. of Notre Dame, 12-5.

New Business

Tony Zirkle, Republican candidate for St. Joseph County Prosecutor, meet with us to discuss his views and to seek our support in the upcoming primary election. Re drug policies, he supports the Drug Court, treatment of addiction, and education. On the topic of domestic violence, he would appoint a senior prosecutor and emphasize education and diversion of low-risk offenders. Regarding Internet child pornography, he proposes seizing offenders’ civil assets to fund additional prosecutors. He favors using RICO to prosecute adult businesses. We also discussed renter-landlord relations, racial profiling, white-collar crime, and the death penalty.

We decided against a collective endorsement of Tony Zirkle. We encouraged our members to vote in the primary as Republicans or Democrats then vote independently in the fall elections.

Announcements

Tom also reported that supporters of LaSalle H.S. are organizing to oppose the school board and keep LaSalle open. Tom asked for a volunteer to attend the LaSalle Group meetings. Kathleen said she was interested.

Tom plans to attend his neighborhood’s safety committee meetings.
